15 year old Violet is known as “Spookygirl” at school for a couple of reasons. First, she can see and communicate with ghosts, just like her deceased mother could, and second, she and her dad live above the funeral home that he owns. Though Violet’s dad doesn’t like to talk much about her mom, her abilities, or the paranormal investigation company they used to run together, Violet decides to hone her abilities by herself and begins doing some investigating of her own. First, she wants to know who is haunting the girl’s locker room at school, and lastly and most importantly, she wants to know more about the night her mother died, while investigating the Logan Street house. Hopefully, Violet doesn’t meet the same fate her mother did while doing her own paranormal investigations…
📝 My Review
I thought Spookygirl was a cute book with a fun storyline, and not creepy at all. I was particularly fond of Buster, the dog-like ghost who lives with Violet, loves cookies, squeals, plays games, and tosses around a squeaky burger. See what I mean? Totally cute book.
While I wasn’t blown away by the story, I was intrigued about the mysteries Violet was working to uncover. I’d say this book is designed for younger teen readers, or middle grade fans, as it is simple, cutesy, and has no romance. It has a touch of spookiness that younger readers might enjoy, without being too scary or over the top for the young crowd. While I thought the story was a bit corny at times (only because it was a little too juvenile for me), I would definitely recommend it for young teens who are looking for a paranormal fix! If/when a second book comes out, I do plan on reading it.
