📚 What It's About

Overweight, red-headed, and adopted, Danielle Levine has always felt as if she’s never fit in, not even at her alternative high school. After writing several sarcastic and inappropriate essays for English class, she is forced to see the school psychologist and attend a social skills class with other socially inept teens. While very smart, Danielle has never been able to easily make friends, until she meets Daniel at their shared social skills class. The entire story is told from Danielle’s writings as she makes observations about classmates, friends, family, and life from the outside.

📝 My Review

Okay, this book seriously cracked me up! There was something about Danielle that I just loved. She was so different and strange, and her perspectives on life were just outright hilarious and endearing. She was so funny without intending to be, but just the way she viewed things was so honest and blunt that I was laughing out loud by page seven. She is truly a fantastic character. She has her own way of doing things, like arranging her books in strange stacks around her room (sounds like me – ha!), dressing up in vintage costumes, and collecting romantic postcards. While her OCD causes her to do some things differently, she deals with a lot of the same problems that all teenage girls face, like unrequited love and body image issues. This book, while hilarious, also managed to be incredibly sweet as we watch Danielle grow and come to terms with the issues surrounding her.

I would highly recommend this sweet, funny, honest, and completely relatable book to all fans of contemporary YA. It is incredibly unique and wonderful, just like its main character.

“I don’t see the me that you see. I wish for just a little bit I could climb into you and then you could climb into me and then we could tell each other what we saw there.”
