📝 My Review
This story was absolutely fascinating!
Becky Wade is a young, elite runner. When she graduated college, she had a fellowship opportunity that would allow her to explore the world for one year. As a runner, she decided to travel to different running communities around the globe to study and observe how different cultures tackle running and their secrets to success. She traveled to nine different countries, including places like Ethiopia and England, where she lived with and trained with a number of runners, practicing their unique cultural techniques and submerging herself into their worlds.
I was instantly intrigued by this story because I’m a bit of a “lapsed” runner at the moment. When I lost all my weight pre-Caleb, I got into running and even trained for and ran in a half-marathon. I’ve been trying to get back into running ever since I had Caleb, but it’s definitely been tough. Stories like this one inspire me and motivate me to find my love and passion for the sport again, and I’m so glad I read it. The story was absolutely captivating, and I loved learning about all the different places she traveled to and finding out more about their cultures — running and otherwise.
Becky seems like a pretty fearless young woman, often traveling to faraway countries with no concrete plans of where she’d go or with whom she'd stay, but it always managed to work out, and for the best. She’s also a very talented writer and has a way of making you feel like you’re out on those trails and running right alongside her. I felt really wrapped up in her story and could envision a lot of the sights she was describing.
Becky is a skillful runner and writer both. Her journey was inspiring, interesting, and so compelling. I loved all the running bits, but also the cultural parts as well. I think this memoir would really appeal to both runners and non-runners, especially those who are interested in travel memoirs or discovering other cultures; you really get a glimpse into these other worlds, and will likely be really surprised and delighted with how welcoming everyone was to Becky. I will be interested in following her running career from here on out!
