2016: Books in Review

Happy New Year, everyone!

As always, I’m recapping my yearly reads. I set my Goodreads reading goal pretty low at 20 since my reading time dropped drastically the year before because CALEB. I’m happy to say I beat my goal by by five and am going to try and step up my game for 2017 with a goal of 50 books since I used to shoot for 100 (but never quite made it).

Please note, I am excluding the oodles of picture books that I read to Caleb because they just don’t count! But above is a picture of Caleb, aka Baby Bookworm, reading on New Year’s Eve. AWWW.

Anyway, check out my stats for the year. I really need to get back into fiction in 2017, I guess! I've really been enjoying my nonfiction reads though. The split in source was pretty good this year, so I'm happy about that at least.

Favorite Books

Girls on Fire by Robin Wasserman – a captivating and intense tale of a toxic female friendship. This novel was dark, violent, character-driven, and had standout writing.

It’s Okay to Laugh (Crying is Cool Too) by Nora McInerny Purmort – a sad but hopeful memoir that’ll make you both laugh and cry. If you love LOVE, wonderful writing, and finding humor in the hard things… this is a must read.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne – an entertaining, hilarious, and unique workplace romance. Pick this one up if you’re looking for a well written, different kind of love story with strongly developed characters that’ll make you laugh out loud.

The American Girl by Kate Horsley – An incredibly intriguing page turner! I stayed up late into the night reading this creepy, mysterious, and incredibly fast paced novel.

Honorable mentions to a couple of cheesy but delightful Christmas books I read and really enjoyed too but wouldn’t quite call favorites: Twelve Days of Christmas by Debbie Macomber and The Mistletoe Secret by Richard Paul Evans.

Reading Plans for 2017

  • Read at least 50 books. I need to put down the phone and the remote and read more!
  • Read at least half fiction.
  • Read some YA and true crime this year. These are two categories I didn’t read at all in 2016 but really enjoy.
  • Read half library books and half my own.
  • Enjoy doing a bit of book reviewing again. I’m signed up for some book tours in the coming months and I hope I’m not too rusty! I did a few last year, and oddly enough, all four of my favorites in 2016 were review books. I love that book reviewing makes me read books I might not have otherwise that I usually end up loving!

Alright everyone! I’m off to start the new year on a good foot by reading and hanging out with Caleb and Jerry today. I hope your day — and year — are great. I’ll be back tomorrow recapping my year in general. In the meantime, I’d love to know what your favorite read of 2016 was!
