Christmas 2017

Christmas has come and gone, and I’m kind of still in shock that it’s already over! I enjoy Christmas as much as the next person, but I’m honestly all about Halloween so I’m good and ready to move on. We had a nice Christmas season though, and it was Caleb’s third one.

Jerry was off work all last week (and this week too), but the weekend kicked off for me when I left work early on Friday at 1 pm. Good decision, self.

Friday night, my two best friends came over for a little Christmas celebration, which was great. We don’t get nearly enough time together anymore, what with us all working full time and having to adult. Jerry and I picked up a pizza bundle from Sam’s Club, so we ate and did some Christmas crafts with Caleb. We painted ornaments and little canvases. The girls were also way too generous and gifted Caleb some cute things like books and Paw Patrol toys, and got me some candles and wax melts. It was a perfect, low key night!

Saturday was hectic but started with me working on some Oreo truffles in the morning which are the biggest pain ever. We were also greeted by a nice big box from my friend, Beth! We met years ago from book blogging and she sends us Christmas treats every year and we all look forward to it! She was WAY too generous and also included some amazing gifts like a gummy bear kit and water beads for Caleb, and slippers and Christmas socks for me. I adore this girl and am grateful that blogging brought us together.

The weather was really bad with a lot of snow and slippery roads, but we ventured out to Sam’s again for lunch because we were craving hot dogs and soft pretzels. That evening, we had a double date with my good friend Angela and her hubby, Evin. We all get along really well because Evin loves horror (like Jerry and I do), books (like me), and video games (like Jerry). We dragged Jerry kicking and screaming to see Pitch Perfect 3 which was cheesy, silly, fun. I actually hadn’t seen the second one yet, so I watched it that morning since I own it on DVD. I love the series and will miss it! Afterward, we went to Red Robin for dinner. Yum! We picked Caleb up from my parent’s house and headed home.

Sunday was Christmas Eve! I started the morning off in the kitchen making Crock Pot hot chocolate, finishing my Oreo Truffles, and making Saltine Cracker Toffee. Caleb played the kazoo and was way too hyper all day. In the late afternoon, I started prepping the Saran Wrap ball game to bring to our Christmas Eve party. It took me a little while to wrap up all the little gifts inside, and in the center was a Starbucks gift card. At 5:00, we headed to my aunt’s for some Christmas festivities with my mom’s side of the family.

Caleb had a blast and received some new headphones and a huge pillow pet, both of which he’s been obsessed with for days. We had some good food, played some games (I declared I was making Christmas great again with the Saran Wrap game and unwrapping kisses with oven mitts), and also did a gift card exchange game. We left with an Outback gift card – yay! Caleb ran around with his cousins and when he got tired, said “night night,” picked up his pillow, and let himself into my cousin’s room and onto her bed. He didn’t sleep, but it was pretty much hilarious.

Monday was Christmas, and we slept in until around 9 or so. Caleb doesn’t really know what Christmas is yet, so he’s not one of those early Christmas risers… but we’ll see how next year goes. We exchanged our few gifts and lounged around for a bit. I got Jerry a Walmart gift card to put towards a PS4 and two horror shirts. He got me some pieces for my Halloween village. Caleb got another pillow pet, a talking/teaching dinosaur, and a painting dinosaur set. He KIND OF understood to tear the paper, but still needed help unwrapping, for the most part.

We went to my parent’s house for brunch with them, my brother’s family, my cousin, and my aunt. More great gifts were exchanged. I got two new primitive dolls and more village pieces. We went home and had a nap, then went to my aunt’s house on my dad’s side for dinner. Caleb had fun and everyone was so generous again. My aunt also made us a cookie jar with our name on it, filled with cookie making goodies.

We headed home and called it a night after watching some Holiday Baking Championship. I kind of had a stomach ache all weekend, and Jerry was pretty upset all day too. It was his first Christmas since his dad died and he really missed hearing his voice on the phone. That said, it was a nice Christmas and we enjoyed seeing everyone, but it was a bit somber and my husband was very quiet and emotional throughout the day which was hard to see. I hope that next year brings a happier Christmas for our family.

The festive spirit didn’t last long as I immediately had to go back to work on Tuesday. This morning before work, I took some time to finally clean up a bit after Christmas and started to take some of the decorations down. So long, Christmas! Bring on the new year, and with it… Halloween! HA!
