Well that long holiday weekend flew right on by, didn’t it?
I don’t do a lot of weekend recaps, but we did a lot and enjoyed ourselves a whole bunch so I thought I’d share about it today. Honestly, a lot of what I blog about is for my own personal memory keeping, too.
The long weekend began for me late Wednesday night. Wednesday is my late night at work every week until 9:00. It usually ends up being unfortunate for us Wednesday night girls the week of Thanksgiving since the rest of the world tends to be home prepping for Thanksgiving while we work. It was fine though and the night flew by. I stayed busy working on end of year orders that were due that day, as well as responding to some personal librarian inquiries which we launched online last week. I responded to three ladies and their requests for books in their preferred genres. Now that was fun!
I got home a bit after 9:00 and luckily, Jerry was home. His work let them out early at 7:00 and it was nice to come home to my husband for once! Caleb was in bed and Jerry had been doing some cleaning and prepping around the house since we host Thanksgiving. We both had our cars repaired and picked up that day too, so hooray!
Another thing that was great about Wednesday is that I get a large reimbursement check every year the day before Thanksgiving. I receive this for not using my work’s health insurance since we’re on Jerry’s. We were able to get our cars repaired and also finished up the bulk of our Christmas shopping that day with a bunch of online orders and a mad dash to Walmart in the morning with my mom and Caleb.
Thursday came and we made our desserts (I do the pecan pie and Jerry made a giant cinnamon roll). The family arrived in the late afternoon and the boys played while we snacked on some dip (of course… what else from me?). It was uneventful but tasty, as always. We’ve been hosting the last few years for my parents, my brother’s family, and my aunt. My mom cooks the majority of the meal, but we all contribute with our own things too. After everyone left, Jerry and I finished watching a Felipe Esparza special I had on the DVR. He’s funny and really resonates with Jerry because he makes a lot of Mexican jokes and Jerry is 100%.
Friday was a low key day and I did not partake in any crazy Black Friday shopping (except for online sales. Duh. I bought lots of vendor wax). I had an appointment in the morning for my laser hair treatment, followed by grocery shopping, and then chilling at home. Caleb and I had a nap, we had some Indian chicken for dinner, and Jerry and I got sucked into a new show called The Confession Tapes on Netflix. If you’re a true crime junkie like me, or just a fan of documentaries, I’d highly recommend it. We watched the first two episodes back to back.
Saturday was a bit busier. Once a month, we hire a guy, Drew, to come over. He runs a company called Progressive Early Learning and his motto is basically “the preschool that comes to you.” We met him at a library program and discovered he also does in home sessions. So he comes to the house with OODLES of activities and games for kids that are both educational and fun. He makes most of the activities by hand and they’re designed to teach the kids about science and such. They play with catapults, play-doh, coffee grind sand, and more. My two nephews come over and they have a ball with Caleb and Drew, so we did our November playdate on Saturday morning. After that was Little Ceasar’s for lunch and it was time for the cousins to leave. Caleb and I had a short nap, then we all just hung out the rest of the day. Other big news was that Jerry had to finally throw out our couch. Not only was one of the cushions falling apart, but Ruffles has peed on it several times. Yay. The joy of rescuing a mill dog. Our new couch is still on layaway at Big Lots and will be covered with several layers so that Ruffles doesn’t ruin it again. Sigh.
Saturday night after dinner (I made goulash and Caleb liked it!), I picked up my mom and we headed to the mall. We had to stop at Penneys and Michaels to use up some coupons before our Girl’s Movie Club! Our theater is at the mall so we headed over after a quick 30 minute shop. Last month, I started up this “club” with some family members. Once a month, we’re going to see a movie together. I created a Facebook group where we do polls for movies we want to see and pick out dates and times, etc. Last month was Bad Moms Christmas and this month was Wonder. It was our first official “club” get together since I had the brilliant idea after seeing Bad Moms. Ha! December will be The Greatest Showman since that won our poll. Anyway, Wonder was excellent and I cried more than once which also happened when I read the book. I loved it a whole lot!
Sunday was a “not leave the house” kinda day. We put together Caleb’s new potty which looks like a real toilet and lazed around in the morning. We’re not officially potty training yet, but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to at least have it for him to see.
I blogged and then transferred some videos off my phone. Jerry brought the couch from downstairs up so we could have something to sit on. It’s a plaid couch that matches my primitive decor, so we may end up keeping that in the living room. Our new couch that’s on layaway may go downstairs in place of that. This couch is much smaller than our old sectional, so our living room really opened up after swapping out the big couch for this smaller one. I brought out some end tables that fit again now and decorated those. Decorating gives me life, so that was fun.
We also “put up” the Christmas tree. Let me tell you about that. Last year, Jerry carried the whole tree downstairs and stored it in my library — lights, ornaments, and all. So putting up the tree this year involved him carrying it up the stairs, putting it in front of the window, and plugging it in. He has a… unique way of doing things, including also folding laundry inside out instead of turning it right before folding. Lawd help me. I also finished a book in the afternoon (The Missing) while Caleb admired the tree all day and kept pointing at it, exclaiming “tee!” I cooked a new Baked Garlic Parmesan Chicken that was easy and delicious, gave Caleb a bath, cleaned the kitchen, then put him to bed. He is a champ about bedtime, but not last night! He was too upset to leave the tree. He yelled from his room until I brought in a light up truck that has a fake little tree on it for him to look at. Sigh. Jerry and I watched another episode of The Confession Tapes, I read in bed, and we called it a night.
Back to work today! I have book club tonight, and we’re doing our yearly Christmas celebration and Secret Santa a little early. One of our girls is due with her first baby any day now, so the Christmas celebration is tonight in case she can’t make our December meeting. Friday, I took off work and am hosting my first Scentsy party, so it'll be a busy (but fun) week ahead!
