Today I’m sharing the books I finished in October, which is the unimpressive number of… two. To be fair, I finished the month halfway through two MORE books, but hadn’t finished them in time to count for the month. Also, one of the books I finished (Kill Creek) was almost 500 pages.

I remember there being a lot of buzz about this one when it first came out last year. I received an ARC with some really clever marketing accompanying it, too. Fortunately, my book club was reading this one, so I finally got around to it and it did NOT disappoint!

Written in a unique format, Sadie is told in two distinct viewpoints: one from the title character, and the other as a podcast.

Sadie had a rough upbringing and always looked after her younger sister, Maddie. Then one day, Maddie is found dead, and the killer is never brought to justice. Suddenly, Sadie disappears. The podcast portion of the book is a journalist searching for Sadie. Sadie, on the other hand, is also searching… searching for her sister’s killer, and nobody knows where it’s taken her.

This book is completely gripping. I loved the two parallel story lines and how they eventually intertwine. Both of the searches taking place in the book had me totally engrossed, and the fast pace made for a quick and easy read.

I’d highly recommend this one, especially to fans of mysteries, podcasts, and true crime.

Note: this was the pick for my Forever YA book club I run at work.

Great horror story to read during the month of October! I’m glad I picked this one to read during the Halloween season this year.

Four well known horror authors are invited to a long-abandoned house for a Halloween interview. It has a horrible history of murder, death, and morbidity, and is well known to be haunted. When they enter the home that has been locked tight for decades, they unleash an unrelenting horror that begins to seep into their daily lives and take over their minds.

This was a classic haunted house story with an interesting take – adding horror writers to the mix. Each writer was very different, and the house was a character in and of itself. There were a lot of psychological elements as well, with each character facing ghosts from their pasts that they’d kept hidden for self-preservation.

Lots of twists and turns in this one, with some unexpected surprises. I stayed up until nearly midnight to race through the last 100 pages because I HAD to know how it would all end.

Truly spooky, though not nightmare-inducing (for me, anyway. I watch / read a lot of horror). Highly recommended for all horror fans.
