Five on Friday (76)

Happy Friday! It’s been kind of a busy week for us, but that seems to be the norm lately. I have to work tomorrow (what us librarians call a “Saturday librarian”), and I also worked last Sunday, so I’m hitting seven days in a row. Sheesh! Luckily, I have vacation coming up at the end of the month (just a staycation). Hope you all had a good week! Here are five things from our week and life lately!

ONE.

My weight loss has been slower than I’d like it to be, so I had an extra appointment with a dietitian this week. I had one last month (over the phone), and I have one next month (over the phone), but this one was in person! It was my first in person one EVER since being in my program, and let me tell you… so much better than phone appointments. This was a new to me dietitian (the third one I’ve had so far in my program), and she was FANTASTIC! She was encouraging, basically told me I’m doing well, talked me down from going crazy about my weight, gave me lots of tips, and answered approximately 100 questions from me. I’m pretty much doing everything right and won’t need to change much, but she is encouraging more veggies (but protein is ALWAYS number one. She said I may only have room for a bite or two of veg after my protein). I’ve also been walking/jogging literally EVERY DAY because of a running challenge / fundraiser Caleb and I are doing all month (we exceeded our goal of $150 and are currently at $155!), and she’s also encouraging me to pick up some strength training. Oh, and Benefiber. She wants me to use that, so I just got some yesterday.

TWO.

Poor Caleb has been out sick from school since Wednesday. Just a cold, but he’s coughing and has a runny nose, so we definitely haven’t been wanting to send him to school. Pretty sure they’d send him straight home due to COVID. Hopefully he’ll be good as new by Monday!

THREE.

Caleb finally got his keyboard! Wahoooo! He’s been taking piano lessons since March, but we didn’t want to spend the money on a keyboard until we knew he was going to stick with it, and he has. His teacher is continually impressed, and Caleb really enjoys it. He was tracking the package for two days straight, and the day before it was set to arrive, he kept asking if it was bedtime because he wanted it to be the next day already. Anyway, we got it in, set it all up, and he loves it. The first night he had it, he was awake in the middle of the night THREE TIMES! This never happens! I had to go in his room and tell him it was still night time and to go back to bed multiple times. Seriously! At 2 am, he said “good morning, Mom,” and was setting up the microphone and headset for the keyboard. Think he was a little overexcited?!

FOUR.

My last day ever of Topamax was Wednesday! Yessss! This is a big stinking deal because I’ve been wanting to come off of it for awhile. I started it last November, and the mental side effects are insane… terrible brain fog. My memory has been so bad and I’ve even been stumbling over words a bit when I speak. Some people refer to it as “Dopamax,” and I totally understand why. I was put on it for migraines, and when I was first on it, it seemed like this miracle drug. It really reduced the frequency of my migraines, but then it just kind of stopped working. After I started taking Emgality a couple of months ago, the neurologist started to taper me down off of it, to make sure my migraines wouldn’t come back in case the drug was still helping, and I finally finished this week. So, so happy and can’t wait to get rid of the brain fog. It’s a somewhat controversial medication, so I’m thrilled to be done!

FIVE.

Things I am currently excited about:

  • The Spirits of the Past Halloween walk tonight that Jerry and I go to every year at a local living history museum.
  • The new Halloween movie! We need to figure out when we can go see it!
  • Being off work from October 22 – October 31! I always take vacation time over Halloween as opposed to the summer when most people do.
  • Actual Halloween! Need to figure out a costume for Holden still, but Caleb has one already.
  • Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas starting next week! I DVR all of the new ones every year, and then get through as many as I can.
  • My LASIK eye surgery in the beginning of November… though I am also very nervous.
  • Doing the Turkey Trot run on Thanksgiving, which Caleb is joining in on… his first race!

That’s five for now — see you in the next chapter.
