Month in Review: October 2021

Well this is a little late, huh?

I haven’t been recapping every month like I used to, but October was a busy month and I like looking back at these posts years later. Figured I would do a little recap of October and maybe try and bring it back every month. We’ll see though. They’re super time consuming, but I kind of use them as a personal journal so I like having them.

Anyway, here’s what October looked like for us!

  • We took the kids to Caleb’s favorite spooky hayride at Powers Farm Market, and this was Holden’s first time going because we finally felt he was old enough! Well, Caleb loved it (like always), and Holden was terrified. I felt kind of bad because he kept screaming and covering his eyes, but it’s honestly not scary! It’s designed for kids! We’ll see how he does next year.
  • Caleb and I participated in a month long jogging challenge fundraiser, and raised $235 in total for childhood cancer. The challenge was to jog / walk one mile a day for a total of 31 miles. We were very dedicated and committed, for the most part, and it was a lot of fun for us.
  • During one of our jogs, Caleb lost another tooth! And then he REALLY lost it when we got home! He dropped it and it was nowhere to be found, so he wrote a letter to the Tooth Fairy, who assured him it was okay and that he could still get his money.
  • We finally got Caleb a keyboard, and he’s obsessed! He’s been taking piano lessons since March, and he’s getting really good!
  • We got a dead tree removed in our yard, and then Caleb and my aunt used a log splitter to break it down. Good news: he didn’t lose any fingers!
  • My two best friends and I had our annual Hocus Pocus viewing night! Katie hosted this year, and it was relaxing and fun. Every time we do something, we always say we need to do it more often. These two are my “ride or die” friends for life and we were attached at the hip growing up. Adulting makes it much harder to hang out with friends though. The worst!
  • I had an appointment with my dietitian that was unplanned. I had a super slow weight loss month and was struggling and frustrated, so when I called the surgeon’s office, they suggested talking to the dietitian. I actually had my SCHEDULED dietitian appointment today (over the phone), but preferred the one I had in October because it was in person. She was very encouraging, told me I was on track, and gave me some helpful tips.
  • I got to quit Topamax! After seeing that the new Emgality was helping, my neurologist said I could taper myself off of the Topamax, and I was so happy to take my last dose in October. Topamax messed with my memory and gave me horrible brain fog. I honestly still feel kind of the same now, so coming off it wasn’t as helpful as I had hoped it would be. Nevertheless, it’s not a bad thing to be able to stop a medication anyway.
  • Jerry and I went to the Genesee Country Museum’s Spirits of the Past tour that we go to every year. I love GCVM; it’s a living history museum and village. The tour involved us walking through the village in the dark with a tour guide (and large group), and several historical Halloween / spooky scenes were acted out in front of the various houses. It’s kind of like a play. This year was different because it was all outside due to COVID, whereas it’s normally INSIDE the houses and buildings. It was still fun though, despite that it was raining. At one point, a thunderstorm started, so all the people on tours had to go inside different buildings for cover, so that was… interesting. We got to resume our tour about 20 minutes later.
  • My Forever YA club met up this month for a trivia night at a wine and cheese bar! We had a blast! Our book club is large enough that we had to break up into two teams. Neither of our teams won, but we had so much fun sitting at the bar, having dinner, and laughing at our ridiculous answers. It was harder than I thought, but I’d definitely love to go again!
  • I got my nose pierced! I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time, so I finally took the plunge. I went to a really great place called Dorje. Though it was super expensive, and I was on a waiting list for a couple of months, I’m so glad I went there. They have a reputation for being the best and are super careful about being hygienic. I actually had to call from my car when I arrived, and they had to come unlock the door to let me in. I picked out a rose gold piercing, and while I was pretty nervous, it was fast and easy. It didn’t hurt for long at all and I love it!
  • I prepared more for my LASIK procedure that I had done on November 4th. At the end of October, I had to go back in for a re-test, and also had to start some of my eye drops in preparation for the procedure.
  • Holden had a Halloween party at preschool. It was POURING rain, and due to COVID, only one guest could attend (just me), but he had a good time. He sung and danced to the Halloween songs with such enthusiasm. It was hilarious.
  • I had a parent teacher conference for Caleb. His teacher was so sweet and spoke highly of Caleb. She said he can be pretty shy, but he always behaves and gets right to work all the time. I was very proud!
  • We had a quiet Halloween, as it was just the four of us for trick or treating this year. However, it was really fun and Holden went much longer than we expected. He LOVED it, and was yelling “Happy How Ween” to everyone. Caleb of course loved it too, but this was Holden’s first year really understanding it.

And that was our month in a nutshell! Hectic, busy, and really fun!
