Month in Review: January 2020

January was a pretty good month full of celebrations, but also a hectic one! Here’s what our month looked like.

Books Read

Most of January was spent finishing up two books I had started in December, though I counted them for my 2019 reading stats. I do this every year, as I prefer to count a book in the year I started it. Then I also started re-reading Harry Potter for the first time since I read it when I was eight! I plan to read one each month. I also started a true crime Netgalley book. But alas, I only had one new book that I actually finished in January, which was my Forever YA book club pick:

  • The Weight of The Stars by K. Ancrum: this book was SO GOOD, you guys! I gave it five stars, so it was definitely a strong start to my reading year. Review to come next week!

What I Watched

Movies:

I’m pretty sure we didn’t watch any movies last month. It’s really hard because we go to bed shortly after the kids do, and it’s next to impossible to watch one while they’re awake because they’re so freaking loud.

Shows:

  • sMothered
  • 60 Days In
  • Life After Lockup
  • My 600 Pound Life

… ain’t no shame in my reality TV game, clearly. Some of these are past seasons too. I have a tendency to DVR shows and then not watch it until the season is done and binge watch it all at once.

What We Did

January is always a crazy month for us because it’s my birthday, Caleb’s birthday, and Jerry’s birthday. Here’s what we were up to:

  • I had over a week off for work, for all of our birthdays (we’re all within seven days of each other).
  • I had a nice, quiet birthday at home. Garbage plates for dinner with Jerry, the kids, and my parents. Jerry bought me a chocolate addiction cake and cookie dough cupcakes. YUM.
  • On Caleb’s birthday, we went to KFC for lunch followed by an afternoon at Chuck E. Cheese. He got lots of books and a couple of new games for his birthday! Also pizza and a cookie/brownie cake. Yum.
  • On Jerry’s birthday, I went and got him some of his favorite cookies (red velvet peanut butter blossoms) from a local baker. Then, we went to a concert that night (Rover’s Holiday Hangover). He wasn’t really feeling it though, so we didn’t stay long. We stopped for some Little Caesar’s on the way home and called it a night.
  • I saw Anastasia with my aunt and friend and it was SO GOOD. I wasn’t sure what to expect. The set and costumes were amazing and the story was so touching. Highly recommend!
  • My friend Margaret hosted a craft night and we crafted together with my mom and sister-in-law! I made two more of my vintage Christmas decorations. I actually started a Facebook page to share all of my stuff (just for fun), if you want to see and follow along.
  • My besties and I had a late Christmas celebration at Katie’s house… sans children! So nice to hang out with my two favorites and talk without the stress and chaos of the kids… though we do love them. They also had a birthday cake for me… my favorite, cookie cake!
  • I also have to mention that my Wednesday night girls at work  got me a birthday cake too, one of my other favorites, a cannoli cake. Yummy month for sure.

Random Tidbits

  • Most of the month was emotionally challenging for me because I tried to stop my antidepressants. Have no fear though… I went back on them and am feeling better already!
  • Someone broke into my car for the second time since we’ve been in our house. They also went through our shed (because it’s not locked). As far as we can tell, nothing was stolen except for the quarter I keep in my car for Aldi. RUDE!!! Luckily, my cousin Ellen sent me a new one for my birthday – ha!
  • Holden finally learned to let go and walk on his own. Yikes!
  • I started a new migraine trial. I’ve been doing trials for a couple of years now for a local research company and I get paid, so it’s pretty cool.
  • I de-bunked some myths and stereotypes about librarians!
  • I had a couple of doctor’s appointments where it was discovered that my heart rate is a little higher than it should be. All in all, my heart looks okay, and my doctor started me on a new medication to try and lower it a bit.
  • My friend Angela started teaching me how to crochet, and I can’t even get past the first step yet, but I’ll keep working on it! It was one of the things I said I wanted to learn, so I’m glad I’m doing it, and grateful for such an awesome friend.
  • To much fanfare… we finally announced the author we booked at the library and that is Zoje Stage! She’s the author of Baby Teeth, which I loved. She used to live here, but has since moved back to PA. We’re thrilled to have her visit us and answer all of our burning questions! She’s been an absolute pleasure to work with and coordinate with on this project and I can’t wait to meet her when she visits in March.

Coming Up

Here’s some of the things on the docket for February…

  • A movie date with Margaret to see Gretel and Hansel!
  • We have kindergarten registration at Caleb’s soon-to-be school this week.
  • Our tax appointment… woohoo! We get money back, so it’s always a good day.
  • Jesus Christ Superstar with my aunt and friend. We love having season tickets to the theater and I’ve never seen this one!
  • A couple of other medical appointments… gettin’ healthy, y’all.

And there you have it… January in a nutshell!
