Note: a few years ago, I wrote a Mother’s Day post for my mom. Today, I wanted to recognize one of my other favorite moms, my grandma.

My grandma didn’t have it easy. She was a young, single mom of four who often worked multiple jobs to take care of her kids. Though they didn’t grow up in the lap of luxury, you’d be hard pressed to find four people who love their mother more than my mom and her siblings love their mom, a woman who is selfless beyond measure. They didn’t have all the money in the world, but they had a mother who loved them, sacrificed for them, and did her best to care for them. Those are the more important things in life, and the measure of a good parent.
Though she moved to Florida when I was little (as many grandmas do), distance has not affected our relationship. Though I often wish she lived here, or I lived there, so we could spend more time together, I still manage to talk to her a lot more often than I talk to people who actually live here. Not a week goes by when we’re not messaging on Facebook about Caleb, life, cruising, work, or any other thing that comes to mind.
When Jerry and I got married in 2013, Grandma was there every step of the way, even from afar. I didn’t pick my dress until we had her on FaceTime, and we went on our very first cruise for our honeymoon per my grandma’s recommendation. She even joined us with her husband (my step-grandfather who is really just a grandfather to me). When we got home, I felt so sad being so far from her after a week together. Luckily, in 2016, we all got to cruise together again, and you can find me dreaming of our next one every chance I get.
I don’t let a lot of people into my life easily, and I’d say that only a few select people know who I truly am. My grandma is one of those people. She loves me unconditionally, and I her. I could never imagine a life without her in it. She is talented (the best quilter in the world), hardworking, sassy, hip, hilarious, and amazing. She knits and sews things for the kids, makes me dolls, and is forever accepting my requests to make various quilted goodies for my home. I am proud to be her granddaughter and lucky to have her as my grandma, and really, a best friend.
To a grandma who didn’t have it easy, yet makes motherhood LOOK easy and effortless: you inspire me, encourage me, support me, and have always been one of my biggest fans. I can’t imagine a life without you in it. Here’s to more cruises, ice cream dates, thrift store shopping, and years of fun to come.
Happy Mother’s Day!
