May was another odd and interesting month. It started with us still quarantining, and ended with me back at work. Not much else happened because of the state of the world at the moment… but here’s my month in a nutshell.
Books Read
I finished 4 books in May. They were all very good, and all very different! Reviews will be coming next week for these ones.
- The Killer Across the Table by John Douglas
- Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter (book club)
- A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
- High Achiever by Tiffany Jenkins
Movies Watched
I only got through 2 movies in May!
- Blackfish: I finally watched this documentary about Sea World and the captivity of whales. It was eye-opening, insightful, devastating. I was captured from beginning to end, and absolutely broken hearted by it. Highly recommend.
- Free Willy: I chose this one for a Saturday movie night with Caleb after I was inspired by Blackfish. He doesn’t pay a whole of attention to movies yet, but he said he liked it, and we plan on watching the sequel this weekend.
Shows Watched
- Spring Baking Championship: I love these Food Network competition shows.
- A Very Brady Renovation: corny but fun show with HGTV flipping the old Brady Brunch house.
- Love After Lockup: I started to catch up on the newest season. This is one of my favorite shows, though it’s so very awful.
- Making a Murderer: still working my way through this one.
- The Circle: same as above.
- Handmaid’s Tale: we finished season two at the beginning of the month, but haven’t started season three yet.
Happenings & Tidbits
- I continued to work from home for the first half of the month. I was definitely feeling some cabin fever, but enjoying my extra free time and naps. On May 18th, our library re-opened and I’ve been back to work full time ever since. We’re offering VERY limited services, limited check outs, and limited hours, but I am back full time. A reporter came in one day, and my photo and name ended up being in the newspaper. UGH! Lol.
- Jerry has continued to be on a rotating schedule, working a week, then having a week off. He is working / training in Grounds right now, which he’s enjoying. He’ll be going back full time in about 2 weeks.
- I got a long overdue oil change. Luckily, car inspections are still on hold with the state since mine expired in March!
- We finally started to loosen the reins, as far as quarantining the kids goes, and they’ve been spending time with my parents again. Considering my mom has to babysit now that I’m back at work, it was a necessity! They aren’t going anywhere else though, yet.
- We had to go to Caleb’s closed preschool to pick up his belongings. Each child went in separately, and his teacher had them each wear a cap and gown for photos. It was sad to celebrate such a milestone like this, but it is what it is!
- We had my parent’s over for Mother’s Day dinner. Jerry made alfredo and cookie bars. Yum!
- We went to my parent’s house for Memorial Day and had delicious homemade garbage plates.
- Speaking of food… I had my third tele-visit with my dietician. It didn’t go well because I gained weight during the pandemic, like most people. That call got me right back on track though, so there’s the good side of it. I’ve been meal prepping and batch cooking to help me stay on track with a healthier diet.
- Due to being back at work and dealing with the public, I opted to get a COVID test. It did not go well. I basically blacked out and had to pull over on the expressway. The good news is, my results were negative!
- My nephew celebrated his 5th birthday with a drive by parade! We all met up at the hospital parking lot (right near their house) and two police cars escorted us by their house while everyone honked and waved.
- Jerry and my aunt built a garden in our yard over Memorial Day weekend! We’ve got all kinds of veggies planted.
- We went to my parent’s house for cake for my dad’s birthday. On this evening (May 30), riots and looting began in our city due to the tragic death of George Floyd. It was a scary and tense evening as we were glued to the news, were given a 9 pm curfew by the county executive, and waited for my dad and brother to come home from scoping the situation out (my brother lives next to the mall and people had broken in there).
Coming Up
- I have my fourth (and hopefully last) tele-visit with my dietician in a couple of weeks. I’m going to try and re-schedule my ultrasound visit soon, and maybe my sleep study if that office opens back up. I’ll continue to meal prep and eat as healthy as I can!
We literally have nothing else on the calendar for June. For the most part, I’m enjoying this forced slow down of life and our calendar being devoid of plans (it’s usually jam packed). We might try and get hair cuts (ALL of us need one, including Dakota), but we may not be able to since hair salons are just now opening back up this week and will be busy. I miss going thrifting, so if the thrift stores open back up, you might find me there. Other than that, we’ll be home when we’re not working! As always, I’ll be catching up on shows and books.
