Ah, summer. My least favorite time of the year. While it was always fun when I was a kid and therefore off from school, I’m enjoying it less and less now that I’m no longer a student. It’s just like the rest of the year, full of work and childcare (with NO summer break), except add in that it’s also super freaking hot. Which I hate. We also have zero travel plans because COVID and also because no money (see: two kids!).
Since we have no big plans for the summer, here are some of the small things we’ve done and will be doing throughout the summer.
New Sprinkler
We got the kids a new sprinkler / splash pad toy for the yard, and they had a BLAST last weekend when we set it up. Holden was pretty tentative about it, but Caleb loved running in and out, and going down the slide we put into it.
Small Gatherings
Lots of stuff coming up this month, like my nephew’s birthday, my mom’s birthday, and the 4th of July. We won’t be attending any parties, but we will have small family gatherings with just a handful of people. Last week, I got together with my two best friends for the first time since all of this COVID stuff started, and it was so nice to be reunited. Our little guys played together and we sat and ate pizza in the yard.
Gardening and Home Improvements
Over Memorial Day weekend, my aunt came over and she and Jerry went nutso in the yard. I helped weed a little, but they did the bulk of the work which was planting our very first garden! Nothing has come in just yet, but I am seeing teeny tiny peppers, and seeing the plants just start to grow and get taller is fascinating. We also need to do some home improvements, like repairing or replacing our broken storm door (the glass smashed and shattered during a wind storm!). It’s been broken for at least a year now, but we need to replace it ASAP before winter rolls in.
Final Preparations for Surgery
I started the my bariatric surgery journey all the way back in January, and I’m finally seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. Everything got canceled and pushed back due to COVID, but I’ve almost completed my pre-requisite checklist which contains about a zillion appointments you need to complete before surgery. I had my ultrasound last week, my next dietitian virtual appointment this Friday, and my sleep study scheduled for next week. The sleep study and clearance from my dietitian are the only things remaining on my checklist. I HOPE this will be either my last or second to last appointment with my dietitian, and then I can finally get a surgery date on the books. EEK!
Ice Cream and Shakes
Our favorite bakery just started selling these “shakeups” which is any cupcake flavor of your choosing, mixed up with ice cream into a shake. Caleb and I went and got our first one a couple of weeks ago and it was incredible. We chose the chocolate cookie dough cupcake, and when we brought it home, Caleb and Holden stood around me like little baby birds and kept taking sips. We will definitely be getting more this summer! We also love Abbotts, famous in our area for the best frozen custard ever.
What will you all be up to this summer? Let me know!
