I’m back with my long lost “Thursday Thoughts” series today because I haven’t blogged in a week (yikes!), and have lots of random tidbits to talk about. It’s been a long week already and we aren’t even done. Sigh. Here’s what’s been going on in our world lately.
Migraines: If you’re following my “new medication” migraine saga, here’s the latest. I’d been feeling pretty decent for about a week, but then I went and had two migraines already this week… so there’s that. I’ve been on the new pills for about a month and a half now. The nurse said I should wait about two months to let my body adjust. If they persist beyond that, I will for sure be calling the doctor again.
Lead testing: Holden had his two year check up on Tuesday. It was totally normal: he had his flu shot, he got measured (30 pounds and 36 inches tall), and then they did the finger prick for lead testing. Well imagine my surprise when I got a call about 2 hours later saying that his lead levels were high and we would need to bring him to a lab for a blood draw. Then they said that high lead levels could lead to brain damage or developmental delays sooo… cue freaking out. Jerry and I both left work immediately and rushed him to the lab. It was beyond traumatic. He was stomping around the waiting room in his favorite monster feet slippers (he makes us put them on), having a blast, and then it was time for the blood draw. It was awful and traumatizing and it made me so sad. It took 2 sticks in his arms, three phlebotomists, me, and Jerry to hold him down.
Anyway, I never once even thought about lead. Seriously! His levels were fine at his one year check up, and Caleb’s have always been fine too. The only thing we can think is that Holden puts EVERYTHING in his mouth and our house was built in the 60s, so perhaps he chewed or ingested something with dust or paint flecks? Maybe the original paint had lead? You just don’t know with some of these older homes. Honestly, I’d love it if we could get a building permit and re-model the entire house, but my bigger goal is just to sell and move in a few years. We should hear more from the doctor today so I’ll keep everyone posted.
Virtual school: Caleb officially started kindergarten last week, and he’s going all virtual. It’s been weird so far. He has to log onto his Chromebook for a Google Meet twice a day for about 20-30 minutes, and then he has packets and things to work on. His teacher seems nice, but it doesn’t really seem all that productive. I just want him to have a normal school experience, and this is not it. Everyone is doing the best they can though, so we will just keep chugging along.
Donut Quest: Well we need something happy to talk about, right? In 2017, Jerry and I went on Donut Quest. We went to several local farms who serve seasonal fry cakes and determined our favorite. Well this year, one of my very good friends Denise and I decided to do a Donut Quest 2.0! We started last weekend by hitting up two farm markets with Holden and Caleb. We rated and compared fry cakes, cider, and fudge. We made a list of MANY more places to rate too throughout the season. I think at the end of our quest, I’ll do a big wrap up post on here with all of our very scientific and official findings. Needless to say, it was good for my soul to just have fun with my friend during the beginning of my very favorite season during such a crazy time in our world!
Ice cream truck: Do you guys have ice cream trucks where you are? We have one who drives through the neighborhood on occasion and rings his bell. We never have cash though, and we never know when he’s going to come, so we’ve only ever gotten it ONE TIME! Well on Labor Day, Jerry had some cash and we heard the bell. By the time we looked, he was gone. A few minutes later, Caleb came flying out of his room to say that he heard him again, so we ran outside sans shoes (and sans bra for me and pants for Caleb). Oops! He got his ice cream though and that was very exciting. Ha!
Ice cream date: speaking of ice cream, Caleb had a little one on one ice cream date with me last weekend. We went to Abbotts and he got his new favorite: vanilla custard with gummy worms. Gross. I got a warm apple pie sundae and it was great. I just randomly wanted to go late in the afternoon so I asked him if he wanted to and he said “oh yes! I’ve been waiting all day for ice cream!” Well okay then!
Another long weekend: I took off work today and tomorrow because I’m having my first Pink Zebra Blend Bash tomorrow! I’m super excited but have a lot to set up, cook, and get ready. Jerry also ended up taking a half day tomorrow so we could go to Kelly’s Farm Market for a fun family outing for fry cakes, apples, and other treats for the Blend Bash. I also have to pick up some school work for Caleb tomorrow too. The plans for today include grocery shopping at Aldi, cleaning up, and starting to set up for the party. It also includes hopefully talking to the doctor or nurse about Holden’s testing!
So that’s everything that’s going on with us! It’s been a strange, crazy, busy, and stress-inducing week for us.
