Okay, so I talked last week about how my big goal right now is to sell our house and move out into the country. I’d love to be able to do that in about 4-5 years or so because we’re just nowhere near ready right now. However, it’s also fun to think about the changes or additions I’d like us to make to our current house.
I really don’t think we ‘ll stay here forever, but if we had to, there would be a lot of work needed to make me satisfied with it. Realistically, it will never be my dream house, town, or neighborhood, but we could still make some huge improvements to it. A lot of these ideas are way too expensive for us to do right now, but it’s nice to dream, right? Also, I hesitate to undertake any big, expensive projects, because how much should we really invest into a house I don’t see us staying in?
Anyway, here’s my goal list for if we end up in this house longer than I’d like us to be!
Shed
As I mentioned last week, we have major storage issues in our house since we don’t have a basement. I’d love a nice little shed in the yard. It would alleviate a lot of our storage struggles. We’ve looked into a bit, but it’s a little out of our price range at the moment, and we’d also have to look into getting permits from the town since you can’t really construct or do much without their permission first.
Fence
This is another thing we’ve looked into but is just too expensive at the moment. I’d love to fence in part of the yard for the kids and pets!
Patio
Another thing we’ve talked about is getting a concrete patio poured so we could have a nice area outside for grilling and eating outside.
Kitchen Remodel
The number one thing I dislike about our house is the kitchen. It is tiny, hideous, and so out of date. We would seriously need to gut our kitchen and start from scratch. We need new floors, counters, cabinets, backsplash, paint… literally everything. It also needs MORE counters and cabinets, so I’d like to add another bank of cabinets/counters to another wall (they are currently only on one wall). Ideally, we’d also knock out the wall between the kitchen and dining room to open the space up and add an island or peninsula.
Downstairs Remodel
The ground floor of our house is currently kind of a catch all storage area since we don’t have a basement. It also is carpeted in a hideous, stained, outdated shag style carpeting. We don’t use the area for much, except that our laundry room is down there, as is our treadmill. One thing we’ve talked about is basically gutting that space and turning it into a playroom. We want to rip up the carpeting and get it tiled or put in vinyl flooring (something like this that looks like wood). First we’d have to pack up everything that’s down there though and then eventually move all the kid’s toys down there after the remodel. It’s a large space and I’d like to see it get more use, and a playroom would be ideal. This is something we actually may do in the next year or two if we can swing it.
Bathroom Remodels
Both of our full bathrooms need some work done. Our upstairs / main bathroom we actually have made some big improvements on, but it could still use new flooring and a new tub. We’ve already put in a new toilet, new light fixture, and a new vanity. We’ve also painted it. The downstairs bathroom however, AKA Jerry’s bathroom, needs an entire gut job. It needs new flooring, toilet, shower, paint, etc.
Updated Floors
I already talked about the hideous shag carpet on the ground level, so let’s talk about the flooring upstairs in our bedrooms and main living areas! Well, the kitchen and bathroom need new tiles, but the rest of the house is wood flooring. I actually really like wood flooring, but ours is very old. It’s buckling, stained, coming up in certain areas, etc. We would need to replace it all, I think. That would be a massive undertaking, but it would really improve the entire look of the house.
Updated Ceilings
Ugh, our kitchen has an ugly tile ceiling, and the rest of the house has that ugly outdated “popcorn” style ceiling. I just want normal, smooth, flat ceilings! Gosh!
Wall Repairs
We painted quite a bit of the walls shortly after we moved in, but over time, some of the walls have gotten slightly damaged. This has mostly been caused by the baby gates, scratches when moving furniture, and even hanging our TV. We definitely need to repair those areas of the walls and then re-paint over them.
Painted Stairs
The front of our stairs are white, but they are so dinged up, stained, scratched, scuffed, etc. from years of being walked on. I really want to repaint them.
And that’s it for now! We actually have done quite a lot of work and updating in our home since we bought it in 2014, but there’s a lot more that still needs to be done. I don’t know how much of this we will actually do since the plan is to move, but maybe we can knock off at least SOME of this list first!
