The Monday morning after a long weekend is always a stinker, isn’t it? Ah well. We had a wonderful three day weekend for the 4th of July, full of both fun and relaxation.
Jerry and I were both off on Friday, which naturally felt like a Saturday. First thing in the morning, Jerry had to go help his buddy from work with his house (he’s retiring and moving), so the kids and I made fun plans with my mom after I got a little housework done. Aren’t weekends supposed to be for relaxing? For us, it seems to be all about catching up around the house, and let me tell you, it is NOT easy to get things done with Holden around. He throws freshly folded laundry and climbs all over the dishwasher. Ugh! He is such a wild man, but so darn cute that I can’t stay mad.
Anyway, back to the fun plans. I found an estate sale via Facebook Marketplace from a woman who was selling her house and cleaning out. Turns out her husband was my technology teacher back in high school and he recently passed away. Since it was the last day of her sale, she was giving everything away, including angel figurines and teacups, both of which I LOVE and collect for my crafts. I asked my mom if she was game to go, and she was! We bagged up her birthday gift (a Firestick) and picked her up.
Mom and the kids and I headed out to Brockport for the sale and were just AMAZED at how much was left and how few people were there. I filled up about four bags worth of stuff, Caleb picked out a few items, and my mom did too. I got a ton of figurines, tea cups, knick knacks, vintage books, candle holders, board games for the kids, and some other random goodies. Caleb, my technology lover, spotted a computer monitor and asked her if it was “avarable,” and it was. I had an absolute blast and can’t believe how many awesome things we scored FOR FREE (though we did donate a little bit of money to her… she was collecting for the fire department). This was the find and deal of a lifetime and I am still so excited.
After we left there, we headed out and stopped at McDonalds for cold drinks because we were all absolutely melting. We stopped at Krazy Cakes after to pick up our 4th of July cakes, then went back to my mom’s and ate donuts from the bakery for lunch. Oops. I asked my mom to cut my hair and we chopped off probably about 7 inches. I usually go to Hairzoo about once a year and just chop it all off. It was about that time, so I figured I’d save some money and have her do it instead. It came out pretty good, and I am much cooler now since it’s just above my shoulders. Phew!
Caleb wanted to stay over at Mimi’s for a bit, so Holden and I headed home. Caleb played with his computer at Mimi’s and was living his best life. When the baby and I got home, Jerry was finally home too. He had brought home a steak sub for me which was delicious, and we watched another episode of Dark Side of the Ring that evening after I picked up. Great show! Even though I’m not a big wrestling fan, my brother, cousin and I used to watch it when we were little. Even so, these stories are just compelling even for a non-fan.
Saturday morning was more chore time after we all got up. I did some laundry, cleaned the kitchen, and did the dishes. Doesn’t a clean kitchen always feel so nice? Sigh. I fed the kids some lunch, then it was nap time for Holden and me. Yes, I try to nap on the weekends during Holden’s nap whenever I can. Once we got up, it was time to head to my brother’s house for our annual 4th of July “party.” It was nothing big, just my family, my brother’s family, my parents, and my aunt. These are basically the only people we’ve hung out with at all during the pandemic, so please no worries or judgments. Not to mention, we didn’t hang out with ANYONE for the first six weeks or so, not even said family members. However, since Jerry and I have gone back to work, my mom is back to babysitting. Everyone has stayed safe and healthy, and we’re all wearing our masks at work and out in public. PSA aside, it was a really fun day.
If you didn’t know, my brother has three boys, and they’re around the same ages as Holden and Caleb. The cousins have an absolute blast whenever they’re together, even if they do sometimes fight like they’re all brothers. The kids enjoyed the trampoline, pool, playing outside, sparklers, and some small fireworks. We also took their annual 4th of July shirt picture (my mom buys them the matching Old Navy shirts every year, just like she did when WE were kids). We had hot dogs, grilled chicken, potato salad, spinach salad, and tons of sweets. We didn’t head home until after 9:30, and on the way home, I pulled into the Wegmans parking lot because we saw at least three big firework shows while driving, and we could see them all from the parking lot. Caleb said the fireworks made him “happy and excited.”
Sunday, the kids woke up bright and early. I was shocked (and sad) because I thought I was going to get to sleep in since they didn’t get to bed until around 10. UGH. That plan backfired big time. Anyway, I had to pick up a couple of decorations from a guy in Penfield and I took the kids with me. It was a nice day and I figured they’d enjoy the drive. When we got home, Jerry hopped in the car and we ran to my brother’s house. My nephew’s birthday gift came in late (Sunday instead of Friday, come ON Amazon Prime!) so we wanted to drop it off. After that, we hurried home, fed the kids, and it was nap time again for the baby and me. HA! Caleb ended up going to my mom’s for dinner and a sleepover, so it ended up being a quiet evening at home. I put Holden to bed around 6:30, and then we had peace and quiet. Jerry was playing video games, so I decided to try out the first episode of the Netflix Unsolved Mysteries reboot and I absolutely loved it. It was so riveting and interesting. I of course got sucked into a Googling / Reddit / Facebook hole of reading up more on the case after I finished the episode. Anyone else watch it yet? I plan on watching the rest of the episodes ASAP, hopefully this week.
I had a hard time deciding what I wanted to watch this weekend: I was torn between Unsolved Mysteries, The Babysitters Club, and Hamilton (my friend gave me her Disney Plus login). I plan on watching the others once I finish my Unsolved Mysteries binge. I saw Hamilton last year when it came to town. Even though I was reluctant about it, I fell in absolute LOVE with it. I love the soundtrack, so I look forward to seeing that original cast with their familiar voices on my TV.
After finishing up the first episode, I climbed into bed and finished up a book on my Kindle and started another one. The book I finished was actually a memoir written by Brittany from Love After Lockup (my favorite trash TV of all time). It chronicled her young life on the streets of Las Vegas. It was absolutely heartbreaking but also gripping. Luckily, LAL comes back with a new season this month and I cannot even wait!
And that was our weekend in a nutshell. The highlight was for sure scoring all of my free goodies at the estate sale. As you know, I love to go thrifting and garage sale-ing, and this was just like that but it was all free. I’ll have to try and get it all sorted and photographed soon. Does anyone care about that? Do you guys like vintage things and thrifting? I’d be happy to share my hauls if it wouldn’t bore everyone to death.
What did you all get up to this weekend? Also, do you enjoy reading these weekend recaps, or are they too boring? I just started doing them again. Let me know!
