If you’ve been around here for any length of time, then you already know I am a horror junkie! Earlier this week I talked about some of my favorite horror books, and seeing as it’s October, I decided to talk about some of my favorite horror movies next! As I was coming up with my list, it just kept growing and growing (and growing), so I decided to break it down into a few categories.
Grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, and lock the doors! Just don’t lock them so tight that you need a locksmith (but they ARE around in case, especially in the big cities like Toronto!)
The Classics
They’re old, everyone’s heard of them, they’re classic…
Halloween: my all time favorite… the original Halloween! I’m also a fan of Rob Zombie’s version.
Scream: I love the whole series. They’re all just fun, classic slashers!
The Shining: I only saw this for the first time last year and I really loved it! Definitely slow burning horror, and Doctor Sleep was great too!
The “Modern” Classics
These are the modern day classics that have become known in more recent years…
The Strangers: this scares me because it’s pretty realistic, and those masks are just spooky.
The Purge: another one that seems like it could happen in an alternate reality, plus the masks that are just creepy as hell.
The Hills Have Eyes: gross cannibals roaming around? Sign me up. I love this one and think it’s super fun.
It Follows: such interesting psychological horror, and unlike anything else I’ve ever seen!
The Conjuring: I’m realizing now that I don’t have a lot of supernatural or ghost movies on here, but this one is gold! I was obsessed when this first came out. It’s extremely scary and based on a true story.
Hostel: another gory series that I find to be realistic and frightening!
28 Days Later: I think this was my first introduction to zombies, and it’s definitely a classic now.
The Cabin in the Woods: this movie is so original, clever, and smart!
The Lesser Knowns
Surprisingly, these lesser known ones are some of my favorites of the entire list! Here we go…
Hell House LLC: UGH, this was such an amazing discovery. We first watched it last year or the year before, and I quickly became obsessed. There are two sequels that are also great, but nothing beats the first one. I highly recommend this to ALL horror lovers!
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil: this is a perfect example of horror comedy. I love this movie!
The Human Centipede: this movie is SO disgusting but also riveting. The sequels were not very good, but the first one is high up there on my list. You need a very strong stomach for this one though.
Hellfest: this movie takes place at a giant Halloween festival. Though it is very unrealistic, I love it. I love the vibes, the carnival feel, and the fact that there is a huge Halloween festival that I wish was real! I actually just bought this one on Bluray.
The Houses October Built: another one that I love for similar reasons as Hellfest. This one is about people traveling to find haunted attractions, kinda like what we're doing for our anniversary road trip this year. So fun and so creepy.
Midsommar: this movie seems to be a love it or hate it thing and I loved it. It is very bizarre and slow moving, kind of unassuming, and then WHAM. Hits you with the creep factor.
Funny Games: I loved this one when I was younger! It has similar vibes to The Strangers (think: hostage situation), and is scary because it’s realistic.
Rest Stop: another gory series that’s scary because it could happen.
Scared Me When I was Younger
I’ve been watching horror since a young age, and here’s some of the ones I started with (most of them are not scary now)…
The Grudge: that stupid noise would get stuck in my head when I was trying to sleep! I don’t think this one is scary anymore though.
The Ring: this one scared the crap out of me. I also first saw this with my besties and our middle school boyfriends / crushes at the theater. Good times!
FeardotCom: I remember watching this in my childhood bedroom and being scared sh*tless. I re-watched this one as an adult and it was very… un-scary.
The Blair Witch Project Series: the second one in particular scared me. I remember having a sleep over with my friends and we watched the sequel. I was terrified (my parents have a large wooded area outside), so I made my dad sleep downstairs where we were. Bahaha!
The Others: LOVED this one! My best friends and I watched this at a sleepover, and several more times too. This one still stands as a great movie.
Signs: my bestie and I LOVED us some M. Night Shyamalan when we were younger, and this was probably our favorite of his movies. I remember watching this one under blankets in her living room, and jumping so damn high when that alien turns and looks right at ya! This movie is still good and is such a classic.
Cabin Fever: gory and gross, but I was a big fan!
Jeepers Creepers: another one that is just plain fun!
And the Award(s) Go to…
Hell House LLC and Halloween: hands down, these are my favorite horror movies… Halloween if we’re going classic, and Hell House LLC if we’re going modern! Please check out Hell House LLC if you can. I promise you will LOVE IT! The producers are actually really responsive and active on their Facebook page (where you will see me fan girl-ing from time to time).
