Our Pre-Winter Household To-do List

Not my house, but she cute!

Why oh why is fall so short-lived? It’s the BEST time of year, but only seems to last for a few weeks. Winter and summer though? Gosh, they DRAG, on and on (or maybe they just feel that way because I don’t like them?).

Anyway, we get hit with harsh winters here in New York. We get tons of snow, wind, and freezing temperatures, and there are a lot of things we need to do in our household to start preparing for the snow. My mind has been all over the place lately, so I thought I’d compile them here to refer back to.

Here we go!

Car repairs and inspections: we both need some work done on our cars, and both need inspections. Honestly, cars need to be in the best shape possible for driving in the snow and ice, otherwise you tend to slide all over. This is why we both have Jeeps with 4WD! We both need to get our tires and brakes looked at to be ready for winter driving. This is all happening in November when we get my health insurance reimbursement.

Yard pick-up: there’s a lot of stuff in the yard right now, like chairs, kid’s toys, chalk, etc. This all needs to be put away in the garage before the snow starts. Our yard is a pain point for me. Our garden this year failed, and our landscaping is unattractive, so I hope we can spruce it up next year. We hired a young guy a few years back to spruce up the front of our house, but most of the plants ended up dying because we don’t get enough sunlight, so it was a waste of money. We need to find someone more experienced who knows what kind of plants will survive in our yard.

Storm door replacement: a few years back, during a freak windstorm, the storm door whacked into the side of the house and the glass shattered. We really need to replace it before the snow starts falling.

Move the grill, hose, and lawnmower: the grill and hose are in the driveway and the lawnmower is in our broken shed (see below). These should be moved into the garage, I think.

Figure out a shed solution: we have a really old and crappy plastic shed. The doors have both fallen off, but we do have some outdoor things stored in there. Before the snow comes and gets inside there, we need to figure something out. I’m thinking maybe we should cover the opening with a tarp, but I really have NO IDEA!

Find and sign a new snowplow contract: Jerry’s friend / former coworker did our snowplowing last winter, but he just moved to Florida. We need to find someone new ASAP. Before we had his friend do it, we used another company who wasn’t super reliable. Why is it so hard to find a good snowplow person?!

Those are the main things we need to do to get ready for winter this year. UGH!
