Hi all! How was your weekend? Ours was pretty good. Kind of busy, kind of laid back… a good combination.
Friday was a normal day. Work until 5 and then just kind of relaxing at home after. I did kick off my first online Pink Zebra party that I’m hosting for a friend, so it was fun, exciting, and busy getting that going. Nothing else much of note, though I did start the new Netflix documentary: American Murder, and I watched that until I was too tired to finish.
Saturday was a very busy morning, and a continuation of Donut Quest 2020! First, we got ourselves and the kids ready, then we swung by the Farmer’s Market at the mall. We had to pick up fry cakes I had pre-ordered from a place called Duke’s who has a table there. I’d never even heard of them, but plenty of people recommended them for Donut Quest. I also checked out a couple of other stands while there and picked up some apples for Jerry, and some soft pretzels and muffins.
After that, our next stop was Sips, our new favorite little coffee shop. Jerry ran in to get our drinks, and I waited outside with the kids in the car: coffee for Jerry, Frozen Apple for Caleb, and a Caramel Apple Steamer for me. Mine was good, but really just tasted like hot apple cider. I didn’t get the caramel note at all. Bummer.
Now let me interject this here with a quick note about the terrible twos! Holden shrieked in the car and repeatedly threw his donut. He is on a rampage these days: always crying, throwing, and getting into things. Caleb even said on Saturday: “Ugh! I don’t want this baby anymore! Why does he cry all day? Mommy, please! I want to get rid of him!” At any rate, he made our weekend a little tough, including making me want a new freaking couch again, even though ours is only six months old (more on this incident later).
Anyway, he shrieked in the parking lot at Sips, but luckily, it didn’t take too long. From there, we headed home, and my friend Denise arrived shortly after. She had stopped at Green Acre on her way for some more fry cakes and apple cider. Green Acre is the closest to our house out of all the fry cake places, so we’d been there before and really enjoyed it. However, it was now time to do a side by side comparison.

First, Denise and I both REALLY liked Green Acre's cider. It really had no bitter note to it at all, and it’s probably our favorite thus far.
Now let’s move on to the donuts.
Both were very delicious and both had an amazing crisp on the outside. That’s honestly the best part of a fry cake, in my opinion. Green Acre tasted almost buttery, while Duke’s was sweeter and a little fruity. We loved them both, but Duke’s was the winner of the day, ultimately because it was somewhat more flavorful. The texture was amazing on both though. I should also note, we tried “Raised” donuts from Duke’s as well which I wasn’t a major fan of. They were super fluffy, and I prefer the crisp of a fry cake. Their apple cider fry cake was incredible though. Yum, yum, yum!
Denise and I chatted for a bit, and she headed home around lunchtime. The rest of the day was pretty unremarkable. Holden and I both took a nap. I finished American Murder that night, and thought it was an excellent documentary. I watch A LOT of true crime, and this was very well done.
Sunday morning, I woke up and Jerry was out “rucking,” but I HAD to get to Aldi for my candles, as usual. Whenever they release new candles, I always go at open time on Sunday, which is 9:00. Because I had the kids though, I was about five minutes late, and for the first time EVER, I wasn’t able to get what I wanted! They released four new Halloween candles, and only had one variety left (I like to get them all). I was so bummed, but I got it anyway, along with some adorable Halloween mugs. Luckily, my work bestie Karen had also gone to Aldi for candles, though a different one, and was able to grab me the other three. Soooo excited and grateful.
The rest of the afternoon was a lazy one. Holden and I napped again (what else are weekends for?!), I gave him a bath because he’s a slob when eating, I watched some TV, did a little laundry, the usual Sunday stuff. Even though Caleb wanted to get rid of Holden the day before, they were back to (kind of) loving each other by Sunday (see below).
Caleb went for a sleepover at Mimi and Papa’s, and they were stopping for Chinese food for dinner on their way to pick him up. I asked for some Lo Mein, and my mother delivered. LOL. Holden loved it, and knocked it all over the couch. After that, he squeezed his juice box all over the freaking living room. Sigh. See why I said I need ANOTHER new couch already?! I was not sad to put him to bed shortly after that.
That night, Jerry and I just relaxed with a little TV. We finished up a documentary from Amazon Prime called Epic Home Haunts. It was pretty good and informative, though a little more boring than I expected.
And that about it does it for our weekend! Hoping for some more Donut Quest-ing this upcoming weekend… just gotta get through the work week first!
